Description

After months, a row of clear moonless nights showed up, giving me eventually the opportunity to portray this beautiful dark nebula on thick stellar background that has been on my wish-list since long.

B312, with its characteristic manta fish shape, lays 17 degrees away from the galactic center in Scutum, just across the border with Sagittarius. I found no distance estimates, but, assuming it stands in front of a star cloud located at the same distance of the neighbor M24, it has to be closer than 10000 ly. If it lays between 1000 and 3000 ly away, then its diameter should be in the range of 17 to 50 ly.

In the upper right corner is visible the reddish Sh2-50 region, also known as LBN66.
